Music has always been a beautiful, nurturing, and impressive art form that has influenced my spirit of imagination, since my mom gifted me a “Close N’ Play” Record Player, when I was 5 years of age in 1970.
Growing up, I would turn on the radio and let the music play all night while I was asleep. From time to time throughout, I would hear a song that would inspire me to awake, as I tapped my toes to the Disco beat; nestled under the covers listening, while falling back to sleep.
On the weekends, back in the early 80’s, I stayed up from the midnight hour to 4:00am, recording DJ Mixes to cassette tapes; from the sounds of radio stations broadcasting from New York City
Those mixed tapes were my encyclopedias. I thoroughly studied and analyzed each mix and every transition. I played the same 90 minute tape religiously throughout the week, while greatly anticipating the next weekend’s recording session.
My friends and I would crisscross and drive the Tri-State area of Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts in search of DJ record shops selling 12” singles. We were always on the hunt for the perfect beat!
After school and work, I invested countless hours hanging out in music stores, listening to records, counting beats, and practicing blending songs on my 2-belt driven turntables and Radioshack mixer.
When I had my corporate radio job in the late 90’s, I would duck out and eat my lunch at local records shops on Valencia Street in San Francisco. Even today, I shop for new LP’s and classic 12’s singles at local record shops.
At times, when I am sitting down on the floor, at my studio, shifting, searching and sorting through my records, I reflect. I see the teen-aged and younger adult Lamont that I once was, when I was amassing my collection of music that defines a dedicated, focused, and consistent aspect of my life’s greatest interest.
My entire collection of music, in the various mediums, such as Cassettes, Compact Discs (CD), Long Plays (LP), Extended Plays (EP), 12” singles, 10” singles and 45’s, truly represents how I have invested my time, my energy, and my resources. Every piece of music that I have in my library has a personal story associated with them.
Now, 43 years after the purchase of my first 12” single, recording thousands of hours of mixed tapes, playing events and socials of all types, and teaching DJ skills to hundreds of music enthusiasts that share the same love for music as I do, I rejoice!
My interests and passion for music has not weaned a bit; it has only intensified since my great discovery of the art of the dj mix.
Teaching and connecting with my students and the general public encourages me to give of myself, which in turn helps me learn more about the craft of mixing music, from a DJ’s perspective.
I am motivated, excited, and humbled to share all that I have learned and all the music that I have heard, with those of you that are interested in my brand of knowledge and my style of teaching.
The intention behind what I do is to create, educate, and to inspire! The concept of Fingersnaps Media Arts was created to be a unique experience, where you can come into the studio and have impromptu philosophical conversations, concerning the art of the DJ mix. The vibe of the studio is a space where you come to learn, connect, and be supported.
Being at the studio gives me great purpose and connection, in a world that at times can seem empty. Having the privilege to touch people's spirit of imagination, just as I was deeply touched, when I put a needle to the record for the first time, over 4 decades ago, is one of the 1001 reasons why Fingersnaps Media Arts, in the Heart & Soul of the Mission District of San Francisco, is in three dimensional form.
Let’s explore possibilities, create opportunities, and Learn to DJ together!
I am a husband, brother, uncle, and friend. A native of Waterbury, Connecticut. I arrived in San Francisco, driving over the Bay Bridge in a
U-Haul at 4:30pm on Friday September 20th 1996; with 75 boxes of records, DJ equipment, some furnishings, some clothing, along with the motivation of self discovery and growth.
I have my challenges and I’ve overcome some of my greatest obstacles by self awareness and staying active. I am now crossing the threshold into my 4th level of manhood. For the past 25 years, I live, work, and thrive in the Mission District.
